Fellow VT users,

There have been numerous questions about how one can create custom virtual sets for use with VT[5] and TriCaster STUDIO systems. As things stand, we do provide an easy-to-use "LiveSet Constructor" that allows you to build simple sets consisting of a background behind the camera and a foreground in front. While this is very useful, it clearly does not open the full power of the system, with some of the features demonstrated by the virtual sets that we ship with the product.

NewTek has stated that it intends to make the tools to create more complex sets available, and NewTek is very happy to announce that it will be giving these to users…for free. The tools for the creation of live sets fall into a number of categories :

LiveSet Constructor already allows you to create virtual sets that have a foreground in-front of, and a background behind a live video source.
NewTek will release a set of LightWave plugins that allow the creation of LiveSets within LightWave. This plugin makes use of some special features recently added in LightWave allowing certain data to be available for the creation of sets. As such, it requires a licensed copy of LW v9. If you do not have this, NewTek offers special pricing for existing customers, so I would encourage you to contact your dealer or NewTek Customer Service. The beta version of this plugin will be released next week; if you wish to assist NewTek with the beta testing, please drop me an email (across@newtek.com).
For VT[5], there will be a tool that allows a LiveSet to be made within Aura. This tool is very close to being put into beta, so if you have VT[5], and would like be put into the list of beta testers, just drop me an email.
VT[5] includes a tool that allows pages to be exported directly from the Character Generator to the LiveSet tab, allowing them to be used as up-stream titles which can be locked to any source.
VT[5] also includes a tool that allows Title Templates to be exported to the LiveSet tab, allowing these to be used as up-stream titles.

Finally, we have a VirtualSet API available for application developers who wish to develop their own content creation tools. Please bear in mind that a strong knowledge of C++ is required to use this.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to drop me an email.

Thank you for your interest in this exciting NewTek technology,

Is there a way to clone some of the existing sets under a new filename, then alter the graphic elements like the background? I'm not looking to alter the 3D video warps at all or change shot configuration. I'd just desperately like to use some of the included sets with modified graphics. Change the world map to a local picture etc.

I think you're going to be kind of stuck until the Aura plugins are released. Uising the (released) simple 'creator', you would lose not only reflections and shadows (maybe you wouldn't mind that so much) but also the image on any 'in-set' monitors or PiPs.

I see that everything is in the form of VSFX files. I'm wondering with the simple editor if I can change just the background images of existing sets and retain the existing reflections & shadows. Hmmm

Nope. Anxiously waiting again for new mojo. :)
