Hi all,

I am a very frustrated VT user. Our computer system seems slow and ineffective. I had a local New Tek reseller come in and "up grade" our system. He put in eSATA, firewire and 3D arsenal. The eSATA drive is a Veris 750 gig external drive. The idea for this was to be able to archive footage. However, apparently there isn't a slot for eSATA and therefore it is plugged into a USB 1.0 port. I tried to transfer 30 mins of footage but the transfer was WAY TOO slow... Futhermore, I can't really learn the 3D arsenal software because my current motherboard doesn't have a sound card... so I can't hear the tutorials. Any advice on what I should do? Just get a new computer? Get a new motherboard? Is there a conflict between SCSI drives and eSATA? Our computer is at least 4 to 5 years old.

Thanks,
Ken

No onboard sound????
Haven't seen one without sound since DX4 boards. Strange

No add on card for eSata? I wqouldn't have gone that way but might be cheaper to get a card for it.

As far as 4-5 years old, you say you have scsi drives (well you mention scsi, so I assume you have the drives), as long as the transfer rate is there then for just cutting and pasting clips and assembling...it should be fine, Tho a Dual or quad is MUCH faster.

And what would be the best set up for a new computer using VT5?

any advice on what computer I should buy? And yes, I do have scsi drives. Does the new computer world have scsi drives or something else?

Still Scsi..Sata

I'm running the VT5 on the compy listed in signature below
Using 4 Sata Raptors and getting 268MB/S transfer with 5ms seeks (same as old scsi 160) so quite happy, you'll get better with scsi (if they are 320 interface).

With quad I can get 3 camera layers, 2 computer layers, 2 sound layers, without hiccupping.
I don't do live stuff tho.

Put mine together for 741.00 But I had HDs from other compy.
Everything else I bought new and used old compy for renderfarm. Was a AMD 64x2 3800.
