NewTek is pleased to announce the immediate availability of VT[5] version 5.2b as a download to all VT[5] registered owners. This free upgrade adds compatibility with many popular NewTek hardware peripherals, including LiveControl™ LC-11 and TimeWarp™ and software applications, including LiveText™ and DataLink™. The update also improves performance for both live and post production.
In addition this update includes a new collection of LiveSetTM virtual sets. In the LiveSet update, we are providing four new LiveSets entitled MiddayReportTM, WorldUpdateTM, NewsLineTM and SkyBox™. The new LiveSets will replace NewsNightTM and MorningShowTM. Three of the new LiveSets (MiddayReportTM, WorldUpdateTM, NewsLineTM) also include Double Box effects to complement the new set design.
Installing this update will add the new LiveSets and remove NewsNight and MorningShow from your system, NewTek no longer authorizes their use.
Please go to the NewTek online registration system (http://reg.newtek.com/) and Logon to your registration account or register your VT[5] to view and receive your VT[5] update including the new LiveSets. Please contact customer support if you require further assistance.
We hope you enjoy the new software update and LiveSet designs.
This 5.2b version resolves the issues that were disabling RS-8 controllers.

There is something wrong with this update. During the install, I got stopped on the SD install with error messages about .dll files not being able to be deleted or replaced. Once I bailed out of that mess, the install seemed to go fine until I had to reboot. When I rebooted, I had to sit through a massive check disk procedure on my c: drive that looked like a restoration of the SD files I had to deal with in the installation. This was followed by a long list of orphaned files being restored. Once the computer rebooted into the desktop, up popped a message that read,
"The software you are installing for this hardware - sound, video + game controllers - has not passed Windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. Continuing your installation of this software may impair or distabilize the correct operation of your system either immediately of in the future. Microsoft strongly recommends that you stop this installation now and contact the hardware vendor for software that has passed Windows logo testing."
Since I don't have the patience, time, or talent to deal with system problems, I bailed at this point and as best I could tell, the previous version of VT5 was left installed. Of course I can't really tell because I couldn't find any documentation on which version I now have on the machine. The installed manual, however, was dated November 15, 2007, so I assume I have the older version installed.
What's going on here? Were we supposed to uninstall the older version of VT5 first before installing this update? If so, why wasn't that stated before we started down this path? If not, why weren't these problems dealt with before this thing went out the door and wasted so much of my time?
Any enlightenment here about these problems and how I can find out which version I now have on my computer? Despite the fact that whichever version I have loads a lot slower but does seems to work fine, I plan to stay with it because I can't waste any more time wondering if a fresh install will work correctly.
NewTek - if this new update is broken, please fix it. I'm a bit irritated at this turn of events.
I ran the upgrade. Probably shouldn't have, but I've been having problems with VT5 lately, so I figured what the heck.
Unfortunately I lose Tasa's Plugins....
Upon launching I get eleven error messages. An example is attached.
I guess it's full uninstall/reinstall time. I wonder if I can just run the upgrade by itself after the uninstall?
On second thought, I'll just try to go back to the previous build....

I'm sorry you had such an unpleasant upgrade, David.
As an upgrade, this installs on top of your existing VT[5] configuration.

Again, my apologies, Dave.

Paul,
Good to hear from you. Since several people are having problems with this upgrade and since one of them ran into the same install problem in the SD section as I did, this suggests there is something wrong with the upgrade. My original VT5 install was done by a NewTek dealer at the time my workstation was built and I haven't done anything with that original software until this upgrade. I'm glad to know it was an install over the original software and that's what I did. My conclusion, again, is that there is something wrong with the upgrade.
Any enlightenment on this problem will be appreciated.

I had to shut down WinRTME in the task manager before the new SD Driver would install. Otherwise Beethoven.dll was in use and couldn't be overwritten.

Paul,
I took your suggestion and called Tech Support. I described the issues I was having and was told by Tech Support that there is a problem with the upgrade and that NewTek is working to fix it. I'm glad to know that something is being done about this. Let us all know when there is a fix and we can safely upgrade our software.
Thanks,
Dave

After a little thought I'm guessing I had to do this because I was using the Windows VT card audio driver.

At your suggestion, I called Tech Support, explained my issues with the install, and asked for help. After I was put on hold for a couple of minutes, the tech person came back and said that there was a problem with the update and couldn't offer anything other than that. At least three of us have had problems with the SD install section that indicates to me there is a problem in that area in addition to any other issues (like the RS-8 issue) with the update. We need some answers before we attempt this install again.

Upon uninstalling 5.2 and reinstalling 5.0 I still couldn't get VT to come up... Fortunately I backed up my system prior to the install... Now I will cross my fingers.

So far, I see that the audio drivers (that are not recommended, but included for legacy users that absolutely must use the VT card for Windows audio) can cause the installer to fail.
Make certain that the VT is not the default audio device in windows and reboot, then try to install 5.2
Theoretically, software that uses the VFW capture device could have these files in use as well. I would suggest exiting any applications that may be using them, such as instant messengers, etc.
We are looking into the RS-8 issue now. The working theory is that you should unplug the USB control surfaces (RS-8, LC-11, etc) before upgrading so that the USB driver can be replaced.
If you are having this issue, I suggest:
1. Unplug all NewTek control surfaces
2. Reboot
3. Reinstall the 5.2 update over the existing install.
4. Reboot when asked.
After Windows boots, plug in the RS-8 and I believe that the device driver will be found.
Feedback on this issue would be appreciated: jperkins@newtek.com

I found the RS-8 could be made to work by unplugging it, uninstalling any HID-Compliant consumer control devices (I had two because I had tried both an LC-11 and an RS-8) under the Human Interface Devices heading in the device manager. Then plugging it back in and waiting while it plug and plays.
If you have any other HID-Compliant consumer control devices be careful.

I also upgraded to 5.2 today. Loading went fine other that the screen coming up saying that if I continued, the computer might blow up or something. Everything seemed to work until I tried to load a previous project that used MP4 files from a Sony EX1 camera. These file won't play now. When I tried to bring over some new MP4 files to the timeline, only the audio portion worked. No video. I call Newtek Tech support and told them the problem, they said that some others had reported the same problem. I am waiting to be receive a response via email as to what to do. I haven't heard yet. Fortunately, I have a program called Norton "Go Back" on my computer that can revert your computer back to a previous time or day. Never used it before, but after reading some of the other comments from other customers, I decided to try it and see if it actually works. It works and I'm happy again. I think I will wait for the bugs to be worked out before I reload 5.2. Thank Goodness for "Go Back"
John Perkins

This is due to a change in using our own Quicktime vs. using Apples Quicktime.
If you notice, Quicktime Player can't read the EX1 files, so by extension, neither can we.
Rename the file to .avi (or anything not normally a Quicktime default format) and our mp4 reader should read the file once again.
If this was in an existing project, you will need to inherit the clips back into place due to the filename change.

If support was removed, guess I will have to edit a project I shot using this format on a Firestore with a HVX-200 camera on SpeedEdit standalone. It does recognize them.
If support was removed in VT 5.2, what was the reasoning behind that?

mxf files should be fine. Also, note that this wasn't a specific removal as such.
The support for general Quicktime formats was a problem in 5.0 and SpeedEDIT. Some files worked great, many were buggy.
Between 5.0 and 5.2 we added a new file reader that uses Apples Quicktime rather than our own version written in house. Nothing should work better than Apples own Quicktime when it comes to reading Apples file format.
The problem comes in when we previously used our DVCPro50 codec since we already had it available for MXF, etc, but Apple does not include the codec.
It's an unfortunate side effect of becoming more compatible with Quicktime, we get the drawbacks as well.
Luckily, it's easily worked around since the original file reader is so flexible that the filename doesn't really matter.
FWIW,
The workstation where my upgrade install attempt went bad does not have an RS-8 and uses a Turtle Beach USB audio interface for windows audio. And yes, anti-virus software was shut down during the attempted upgrade installation.
The uninstall and reinstall of the previous build of VT5 went perfectly. I'm going to standby for Tasa to do his thing before trying the upgrade again, since I use his plug ins.

VT5.2 is installed and working... but not the RS-8. I unplugged it before I installed 5.2, but after re-connecting the RS-8, it doesn't light up.
You mention re-installing the RS8 drivers. How do I do this and where do I find them?
Also, upon booting 5.2, I get this error: http://newtek.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=64106&d=1222914895. What does this mean and is it causing any problems?
Thanks

Of course, since I got ELEVEN of those "Entry Point" errors, I'd be curious to hear about what caused those errors as well.

We were able to upgrade without a hitch. We only have a SX8 attached, so we didn't have any errors at all.
The custom skins that we had made for VT5 did take some additional tweaking - the skin-codes have been changed somewhat and required additional attention for the switcher we had customized.
Initial reaction is that it is considerably faster loading. Thanks Newtek.
That's good news, Keith. Congratulations!
Now, as for the rest of us.....

Depending on which version of the fix I sent you, it may not have worked. It took a while to narrow it down.
The last one I made worked for 100% of the users who reported back, so that is what I changed in the 5.2b installer.

Is this normal?
Thank You
David
Paul Lara

No that's not normal, David. There should be several links under VT[5] downloads: 5.2b, LiveSet Constructor, and LiveSet Skybox. If you're not seeing that, contact NewTek Customer Service.
John Perkins

Note that SkyBox is included with 5.2, so there is no reason to download this in addition to 5.2.
It's really only useful for 5.0 users.

This weekend I updated my VT4 to VT5.0 with no apparent problems. Then I tried to install VT5.2, but couldn't because the download button doesn't show up on my monitor (1920x1200 resolution)! Actually it would, but my screen seems to stop short of showing the download button; it shows everything else on the download page except that one small area that contains the download option (though the blue bar at the bottom of the screen with NewTek link info is okay)! All the other update options available to me seem to work (i.e., download), so I'm puzzled why this one feature does not. The NewTek tech thinks it might be related to pop-up software, but I'm thinking that if I can download some options, I should be able to download all options. I did have some recent problems related to Adobe wanting to be updated but this seems to be resolved now. My VT5 computer is on a wireless network. Interestingly, my wife's computer (which the wireless router is attached to), shows the VT5.2 download option, and I can't figure out why she has it and I don't. Would appreciate any explanations or theories .

The "little yellow bar" doesn't present itself for the VT5.2 download option, although it does when I click on the other possibilities available to me (everything else works...only the VT5.2 download is resistant). The problem is that the part of the page that the "Download option" sits on just doesn't show, and I can't scroll down past the reminder that the download is a large file and will take a little bit of time. It's as if you cut off the last inch or so of page, and nothing I do seems to bring it up.

Well, actually I can scroll, Pete. It's just that the page stops right before I reach that darn download option, so I can't see it or click on it to begin the download. None of the other options available to me (lightwave, various VT4 incarnations, etc) act this way, and I could download all of them if I needed/wanted them. It's just this one page.
Sigh...at least I have the VT5 to play with, and it seems to be okay. Thanks for you suggestions (that's a pretty big Tonka truck in your avatar!).

Maybe internet explorer.

Yeah, I would have thought that the display might be the problem as well, but it's at 1920x1200 (an HP L2335 23" monitor) and nothing else seems to be affected. Besides, my wife's computer is at a smaller resolution and there the download is where it's supposed to be. On my computer monitor I can see the blue band at the bottom that has various NewTek links (contact us, etc), and a small bit above that, but the Download button can't be seen or selected. It's a mystery but I'm sure it will be solved sooner or later.
By the way, I live in the Los Angeles area and would love to drive one of those rigs up the I-405 during rush hour!

I managed to circumvent my recent VT5.2 download problem by using my wife's computer to download the update onto a CD and then transfer everything over to my computer. This technique seemed to work fine, and apparently all is fine and dandy now. Never could see that download button though.
Interestingly, however, (on a lark) tonight I downloaded the beta IE 8 and installed that onto my computer, and lo and behold the 5.2 download now shows forth in all it's radiance and glory! I'm not sure if the IE7 that I had been using was the culprit, but maybe it had something to do with it. Some other things weren't working right either, so it's possible the IE8 put the system back onto a more even keel. Who knows? Anyhow, I'm satisfied that a satisfactory solution was attained.

I am sure this is a stupid question to ask but were any of the real bad bugs that I described to technical support which they varified as bugs last spring been fixed in Speed Edit VT at all. They are still there. Will they be fixed at all. If so when will they be fixed? Why did tech support bother to write them down and verify that they were bugs if you weren't going to bother fixing them. By the way the CG Designer sucks worse than it did in VT2. Sombody did something to it to make it this buggy.
