Hey guys and gals,
Looking to upgrade the toaster. Is there going to be any problems with the Intel® 5400 chipset?
May need to get a new 4U chassis because of CEB on the new.
The old board is a ncch-dl dual zeon.
AMD ATI HD 4850 Graphics Card, PCI Express, 512MB
Motherboard, Z7S WS 5400, Dual Xeon, CEB, Max 24GB DDR2, 3PCIEX16, PCIEX,
Quantity 2: 2GB PC2-6400 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM DIMM
Quantity 2: Processor, Xeon QC E5410 2.33GHz, 12MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz
Wouldn't mind going bigger on the CPUs, trying to keep cost down.
Thanks in advance.
Best,
Bill

look into a 4830, unless you are going to be doing intense modeling, it will help lower your costs.
and if you look on newegg you can probably find some DDR-2 800 in 4gig kits for 40 bucks each.
One more thing, nehalem is about to hit, so if you can wait, the DDR-3 Bandwidth would help a ton, as well as ICSH-11 controller with disk performance.

I would use an Nvidia GeForce 9600GT 512MB video card instead. . . . NewTek tends to favor Nvidia over ATI.

If you can hold off 'till spring it might be worthwhile.
NewTek employees have said they'll have an HD Tricaster out by the DTV changeover on February 07, 2007. It's most likely, that if there is an HD version of the VT in the future, that it will rely on the same card as the HD Tricaster - so that might be worth considering in motherboard selection, as it won't necessarily be PCI based.
Then of course, you could also spend your time waiting, and waiting when you could have upgraded already, so I suppose it depends a lot on your budget - if upgrading hardware is no big deal, or you need to upgrade to something that you'll still be using 3 or more years from now.
Personally I hope that when VT supports HD switching, it will still be backwards compatible to provide SD switching with legacy hardware, but there are no guarantees there.

Feb. 07, 2007??? Well, I guess they missed that date. :hey:
You probably meant Feb. 17, 2009. I wouldn't really expect it then, but I'd expect it for NAB 2009.
That said, the motherboard he mentioned has both PCI Express slots and PCI-X slots, so that would cover any hardware card Newtek could come out with for HD.
But honestly, with Core i7 CPUs and X58 motherboards coming in under two weeks, I really wouldn't recommend that anyone buy the current and very soon to be obsolete tech right now.
